A bad night for Biden

On June 27, Joe Biden and Donald Trump faced each other in the first presidential debate of the 2024 US presidential election. Critics of every political stripe agreed, it was a disaster for the current US President.

'Soft coup'

However, more than a handful of news sources, such as British newspaper The Daily Mail, believe that Biden’s lackluster performance was no accident but part of a “soft coup” to oust him.

All part of the plan?

The Daily Mail quotes sources anonymous sources close to the US Democratic Party, the debate could have been set up for him to fail and replace him early on for another, younger, more palatable candidate.

Backroom talks

“Publicly the Democratic leadership has been backing Biden because they can't appear to be disloyal to the President, but privately there have been discussions going on for a long time that he's too old to beat Trump”, one source told The Daily Mail.

Get done with it

One point of contention is how early the debate was carried out, in June, compared to previous years. In the past, they have usually been held in September or October, in preparation for voting in November.

Set up to fail?

“They wanted to test him against Trump early, while there was still time to replace him if he failed to rise to the occasion. Which, of course, he did spectacularly”, another Democratic Party insider told The Daily Mail.

Give up, Joe

This would mean that the calls for Joe Biden to step down from within his own party and news outlets, such as The New York Times, are all part of a plan to replace him without directly opposing the current US President.

Easier said than done

NBC News comments that several voices within the Democratic Party have started requesting Joe Biden to step aside after the disastrous debate. However, it’s easier said than done.

The DNC in Chicago

If Biden doesn’t leave by his own volition, it could lead to a revolt at the Democratic National Convention, scheduled to take place in Chicago from August 19 to 22.

A revolt within the Democratic Party

The large majority of Democratic delegates meeting in Chicago in August have pledged to support Joe Biden, but that was before the debate, which raised the concern about Biden’s state of mind.

Not going without a fight

The BBC highlights that removing Biden as a candidate is difficult: He’s the incumbent and the time, resources, and optics of choosing a candidate to replace him could be detrimental.

Too little, too late?

If there was indeed a conspiracy to softly oust Biden, it would appear that it’s too little and too late, with just a few months shy of the presidential election.
