Verástegui and Trump have a lot in common
A climate change denier, gun enthusiast, religion fanatic, against the decriminalization of abortion and anti-LGBT+, the controversial Mexican actor and aspiring politician Eduardo Verástegui has a lot in common with former United States President Donald Trump.
Producers, actors and politicians
Both Trump and Verástegui have produced and acted in films and television shows, and both entered politics and aspired to the presidency of their countries. However, while Trump reached the White House once, and maybe even a second time, Verástegui wasn’t able to become a candidate, at least this time around.
His most recent box office hit: 'Sound of Freedom'
On the other hand, Verástegui has gone further in Hollywood than Trump. His last performance in the film 'Sound of Freedom', which he produced, was a box office hit in the summer of 2023 in both the United States and Mexico.
Perpetuating the QAnon conspiracy theory
The film, about a US federal agent who goes to Latin America to rescue trafficked children, was also widely criticized for perpetuating the US far-right QAnon conspiracy theory, about an international s e x trafficking ring orchestrated by Democratic figures and who sees Trump as a “savior.”
“The future president of Mexico,” according to Trump

Trump even organized a screening of the film at his New Jersey golf club, which was attended by Verástegui, who was described by the host as “the future president of Mexico,” according to 'TIME'.

Conservative Action Political Conference (CPAC)
They are both part of an organization known as CPAC that brings together conservative politicians from different countries on the American continent every year, including the former president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, and the current president of Argentina, Javier Milei (pictured).
A career based on promoting religious and traditional values

Although many Mexicans know and remember Verástegui for his performances in soap operas and films from the 90s and 2000s, the actor has built a career focused on promoting religious and traditional values. And although he has hundreds of thousands of followers, his controversial opinions have generated debate.

A video inciting hate

The most recent controversy broke out after the Mexican actor published a video in which he threatens environmentalists and LGBT+ people.

“Terrorists of the 2030 agenda”

“Look what we are going to do to the terrorists of the 2030 agenda, climate change and gender ideology,” the actor wrote along with the video in which he appears firing a military rifle.

A satire?

After being accused of inciting hatred and violence, he tweeted that the video was “satire.” “What I’m saying is that, with strength and aim, we are going to combat progressive culture and policies,” he wrote.

Insists on a link between child abuse and the LGBT+ community

However, it was not the first time that he promoted hatred towards the LGBT+ community. The actor has said on more than one occasion that there is a link between child abuse and the LGBT+ community.

A controversial tweet

When retweeting a news story that exposed an alleged case of a gay marriage that had adopted and prostituted minors, Verástegui wrote “And they said there was no link.”

Innapropiate sexual activities with an abuser?

The tweet generated a massive wave of criticism from X users, to which was added that of an actor who accuses him of having organized o r g i e s with Antonio Berumen, a music producer accused of abusing another man, as reported by SDP Noticias.

It is rumored that he had a romantic relationship with Ricky Martin

Despite having ultra-conservative and anti-LGBT+ ideas, it is said that at the beginning of the 2000s, when Verástegui was part of a 'boy band' called Kairo, he had a romantic relationship with the singer Ricky Martin, as stated in the television program 'Gossip no like'.

Before Ricky Martin made his homosexuality public

It is said that the relationship ended in 2005 because Verástegui did not want a public relationship. That year, Ricky Martin sold his mansion in Miami where they both lived and a few years later, the singer made his homosexuality public.

A love letter and a shared mansion

Although there is not much evidence to support the relationship, other than an alleged love letter, it is a fact that they lived together. Verástegui, however, has denied the relationship when questioned by reporters.

His position on the decriminalization of abortion

Like Trump, Verástegui is in favor of criminalizing abortion. The day the Mexican Supreme Court of Justice declared the criminalization of abortion unconstitutional, the actor associated an earthquake with the court's decision.

The actor associated the earthquake with the decriminalization of abortion
The historic day coincided with an earthquake in Acapulco, and the actor wrote in X: “Today Mexico trembles. […] Today thousands of babies have been sentenced to death.”
The formula of religious ultraconservative politicians
Like Verástegui, Republican figures in the United States have associated natural disasters with what they call the 'woke' agenda, such as Marjorie Taylor Greene, who wrote in X a few days ago that God sent them the New York earthquake and the eclipse as signs for them to repent.

Climate change denier
Like Trump, he has described the existence of a climate crisis as a “big lie,” according to an Infobae article.
Could Eduardo Verástegui become president of Mexico?
Verástegui is criticized by many Mexicans but his ideas are supported by many others. This time he has not become president and perhaps many consider the idea ridiculous, but it would be worth remembering that the same was once thought of Donald Trump, who not only reached the White House once, but is now competing for the presidency of the USA for the third time.
