Was Donald Trump tortured in a Georgia jail last summer?

The internet has been having so much fun at Donald Trump's expense after he made some pretty outlandish claims regarding what went down when he was processed at the Fulton County jail in Georgia in August 2023.

As a reminder, Donald Trump ended up in jail due to his criminal indictment, which includes 13 charges due to allegations that he attempted to overturn the presidential election results in Georgia in 2020.

Trump's arrest produced one of his most famous photos to date: the former president's mugshot.

As reported by The Guardian, in a recent fundraising email, Donald Trump spoke about his arrest and all the "duress" he endured and, of course, also took the chance to monetize his "trauma."

In an email that was also trying to sell Trump supporters a coffee cup with his mugshot on it, the convicted felon wrote, "I want you to remember what they did to me. They tortured me in the Fulton County Jail and TOOK MY MUGSHOT."

He then continued, "So guess what? I put it on a mug for the WHOLE WORLD TO SEE!"

Back August 2023, Trump was booked, fingerprinted and photographed for his mugshot in Georgia, in a standard process which lasts a grand total of around 20 minutes.

As The Guardian highlights, at that time nor directly after his booking were any allegations of mistreatment or torture made by the former president.

Since his arrest, Donald Trump has used it and his famous mugshot to his advantage and even began selling merchandise such as t-shirts, mugs, and bumper stickers with the slogan "Never surrender" on them with his jail photograph on it not long after being released.

Trump has also changed the rhetoric and made himself out to be a political prisoner, comparing himself to the late jailed Russian opposition leader and Putin's biggest critic, Alexei Navalny.

In addition, as highlighted by The Hill, Donald Trump often refers to his supporters jailed for the role they played in the January 6 Capitol riot in 2021 as "hostages."
