The Kremlin and Russian state media rejoice after Trump’s phone call
AP News writes that Russian official and state media has taken a “triumphant” tone after the historic phone conversation between President Vladimir Putin and US Commander-in-Chief Donald Trump.
According to AP News, Trump seemed to sideline Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as well as governments from the European Union, to directly negotiate with Putin about putting an end to the war.
Meanwhile, The Daily Beast writes that in the days after the phone call Russian radio and television were full of propagandists, who grinned from ear to ear and even broke into laughter when talking about Trump's call.
Kremlin representative Dmitry Peskov was cited by AP News admitting that the “position of the current US administration is much more appealing”.
Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chair of Russia’s National Security Council, wrote in an online statement that “the presidents of Russia and the United States have talked at last. This is very important in and of itself.”
Senior lawmaker Alexei Pushkov could barely hide his glee. “I am sure that in Kyiv, Brussels, Paris and London they are now reading Trump’s lengthy statement on his conversation with Putin with horror and cannot believe their eyes”, the Russian politician wrote online, per AP News.
Russian state news agency RIA Novosti wrote an opinion column quoted by AP News with a loud and clear message: “The U.S. finally hurt Zelensky for real”. The same op-ed claims that Putin and Trump have found common ground.
According to The Daily Beast, Evgeny Popov, host of the Russian television show ‘60 minutes’, marveled that that Trump was destroying Western military alliances and dividing Europe into pieces, something the Kremlin has always desired but could only dream of.
During a broadcast of his show ‘The Evening with Vladimir Solovyev’, the Russian TV host (pictured) was described by The Daily Beast as rejoicing that the United States intends to disregard NATO’s Article 5 in case Moscow attacked any European NATO member.
Political scientist Sergey Mikheyev told Solovyev on his program that Moscow could easily strike Brussels, London, or Paris and forget the notion that the United States would get involved in the conflict.
The Daily Beast highlights that the message was pretty much the same across Russian state media: the military should advance and take as much Ukrainian territory as possible, as they expect full concessions and no consequences from Trump.
