An intense political year: these are all the 2024 presidential elections worldwide
2024 has been called the most significant election year of the century or even in history. This year, 40% of the world's population will elect a maximum authority in its country.
According to Time, around 64 countries and territories will hold general or presidential elections in 2024, which includes large political communities like the European Union.
But quantity is not the only relevant characteristic of 2024's elections. This year, candidates will run in prominent and influential countries like the US or Russia.
The US 2024 election is packed with uncertainties, with Donald Trump excluded from the primary ballot in some states and significant issues like abortion rights on the table.
On the other hand, Vladimir Putin will be embarking on a campaign toward a sure victory. Still, the vote breakdown (if made available) can shed some light on the political situation of the Russian leader.
Like in Russia, Mexican election results are practically a given. The party of the current President, Lopez Obrador, is favored in every poll. Either way, Mexico will have its first female president, as the officials and opposition candidates are women.
India's election could have a deeper effect on its future. The highly popular Prime Minister, nationalist Narendra Modi, has walked down a path of increasing authoritarianism and could be ousted by an opposition coalition.
Nationalism might also play a significant role in the parliamentarian elections in the European Union. The rise of the far-right movements in the region can define the results.
The opposite could come true in Taiwan: the people might reelect a pro-independence Democratic Progressive party, sparking even more tension with the Chinese government.
According to The Guardian, other interesting elections to watch in 2024 are the ones in Pakistan and Bangladesh, both countries in highly volatile situations.
Algeria, Tunisia, Ghana, Rwanda, Namibia, Mozambique, Senegal, Togo, and South Sudan are holding elections, while Africa faces a democracy crisis. Between 2020 and 2023, 13 coups have succeeded in the continent.
South Africa is also holding elections this year. The ANC party could lose its majority for the first time since the end of the apartheid.
Some elections are expected to happen in 2024 but are still uncertain, given the countries' political climate or peculiar conditions.
Venezuelan elections were supposed to happen in 2024 with the participation of the opposition. However, the regime of Nicolas Maduro has taken action to bar the opposition candidate from running.
The British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, also promised to call elections in 2024, but a date has not been set. According to Time, there is a chance that the Labour Party will snatch the majority from conservatives.
The elections come in a complex worldwide context. According to The Guardian, global freedom declined for the 17th consecutive year in 2023, and the populations of Western countries are unsatisfied with the current state of democracy.
