Barron Trump declines role as RNC delegate
On Wednesday, May 8, Barron was chosen by the Republican Party of Florida to be one of the state's at-large delegates to the Republican National Convention. However, it looks like he won't be getting into politics after all.
The Daily Mail was the first to report that 18 year-old Barron's mother Melania Trump shot down the idea of her son getting into politics.
"While Barron is honored to have been chosen as a delegate by the Florida Republican Party, he regretfully declines to participate due to prior commitments," a spokeswoman for Mrs Trump said in a statement to the press.
Barron is set to graduate from high school in the coming week and likely has plans to begin his post-secondary education, which is hardly surprising.
Furthermore, his mother, Melania, has always tried to shield her son from the public eye, so she may have had some influence in Barron's decision to decline the role of RNC delegate.
However, Donald Trump seemed pleased on May 9, the day after the announcement that Barron had been chosen as a delegate. As Politico highlighted, an official from the Trump campaign said Barron "is very interested in our nation's political process."
NBC News reported that on Thursday, May 9, in an interview with Telemundo 51 of Miami, when Donald Trump was asked about his son entering the world of politics, Trump made a mistake about his son's age, once again proving that Joe Biden is far from the only one to make blunders.
The Telemundo 51 reporter asked what Donald thought about Barron becoming an RNC Florida delegate, to which Trump responded, "He's pretty young, I will say. He's 17. But if they can do that, I'm all for it."
As NBC News reported Donald then went on to say that he thought Barron becoming a delegate was "very cute," and added, "He’s a very young guy, and he’s graduating from high school this year."
In a statement to the press regarding the RNC delegates, Florida GOP chairman Evan Power said, "We have a great delegation of grassroots leaders, elected officials and even Trump family members."
Power continued, "Florida is continuing to have a great convention team, but more importantly we are preparing to win Florida and win it big."
Barron, who only turned 18 in March of this year, would have joined his other politically involved older siblings, Eric Trump, Donald Trump Jr., Tiffany Boulos, formerly Trump, and her husband, Michael Boulos, as other at-large RNC delegates.
The Trump family will have a huge impact on Florida's RNC delegation, and as can be expected, all the Trump kids will be putting their father's name in for the nomination.
All of the Florida RNC delegates will appear at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee this July. It is now unclear if Barron will attend the convention.
As CNN pointed out, only two of Donald Trump's five children is currently not getting involved in politics: Barron and Ivanka Trump. Previously, Ivanka worked as a senior adviser in the Trump administration.
Barron Trump's name was dragged into the headlines in April at the beginning of his father's New York criminal trial over the hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels, which occurred prior to the 2016 election.
Donald Trump's attorneys argued that former-president should be allowed to take break from trial to attend Barron Trump's May 17 high school graduation, which according to the BBC, Judge Juan Merchan agreed to allow.
According to Politico recent polling revealed that Donald Trump is ahead of President Joe Biden in Florida by more than 10 points. It is expected that Donald Trump will win the state as he did in 2016 and 2020.
