In pictures: Trump visits the Bronx
On May 23, Donald Trump held a rally in perhaps the most Democratic county in the United States: the South Bronx.
As highlighted by the BBC, Trump's goal was to win over minority voters ahead of the November elections.
Donald Trump spoke to his supporters in Crotona Park, which is located in one of the city's most diverse and poorest areas.
The neighborhood was a big change for Trump, who tends to hold rallies in predominantly white communities.
According to CNN, the crowd was not quite as diverse as expected in such a culturally varied neighborhood...
However, a surprising number of Black and Hispanic voters turned up to hear Don speak.
According to the BBC, Trump spent a significant amount of time telling his supporters about how he helped to shape New York City and make it great.
Trump talked about how New York City used to be a place of inspiration, saying, "Everyone wanted to be here, but sadly this is now a city in decline." He went on to describe the current state of the city as a place of high crime and crumbling infrastructure.
Donald Trump also spent a significant amount of time talking about how he would treat the Black and Hispanic communities better than Biden if he is voted in as president.
Trump said that the massive influx of migrants entering the US from Mexico was negatively affecting the economy of minority voters.
The BBC reported Donald told the crowd, "The biggest negative impact [of illegal immigration] is against our Black population and our Hispanic population, who are losing their jobs, losing their housing, losing everything they can lose."
Unsurprisingly, Trump also made some pretty wild comments about how immigrants from Africa, Asia, and the Middle East were out to get Americans.
Trump told the crowd, "Almost everyone is a male, and they look like fighting age. I think they're building an army. They want to get us from within."
As reported by the Associated Press, not everyone was thrilled with Donald Trump's rally in the South Bronx. The Bronx Democratic Party helped organize a protest at the park at the same time as Trump's rally.
Democratic State Rep. Amanda Septimo, who represents the South Bronx, told the A.P., “We are used to elected officials, to government officials, to opportunists of all kinds who come to our community and use our painful history.”
Septimo continued, “They talk about the Bronx and everything that’s wrong with it, but they never get to the part that talks about what they’re going to do for the Bronx and we know that Trump is never going to get to that part in his speech.”
