No peace for Ukraine: Zelensky faces a new internal threat

There is no peace for Ukraine. At a time when Russia's offensive advances and the United States questions its future military support in the event of Donald Trump's re-election, the country faces a new danger.

These days a new front has opened in the country and this time it is internal. In fact, the country's security forces recently announced that they have managed to thwart an alleged coup attempt against Volodymyr Zelensky's government.

As CNN explains, in a message on Telegram, the Ukrainian Security Service reported that the alleged coup plotters planned to provoke riots in Kiev on June 30 – Constitution Day in the country – and then take control of Parliament and expel “the military and political leadership.”

As Newtral explains, the supposed coup was masked behind a “peaceful” demonstration in which, in reality, the objective was to choose a new “interim government.”

The leader of this failed attempt is known to the authorities. According to the security service, he is the “co-founder of an NGO” with experience in these types of acts and in “anti-Ukrainian” activities since 2015,” CNN reports.

According to the authorities' statement, the main person responsible rented a room for 2,000 people and hired soldiers and armed guards to reach parliament. The security services reported that they seized weapons and ammunition.

For the plan, this activist had the support of several community organizations in Kyiv, Dnipro and other regions of the country, although it is not clear if he had any contact with Russia.

After revealing this coup attempt, Ukrainian authorities identified four suspects. Two of them are detained and face 10 years in prison if they are found guilty in the end.

This new front is a new weakness for this country, in the face of a conflict that is far from over. Russia, in fact, is about to inaugurate a new train line that could provide a logistical advantage for the transport of military equipment and for its offensive.

As reported by the newspaper El País, Zelensky intends to present a peace proposal to Russia before the end of the year: a document that third countries give to the Soviet country on behalf of Ukraine with the aim of negotiating an end to the conflict.

For this reason, on June 16, at the Peace Summit in Switzerland, the president asked that the next meeting be held within a few months, to accelerate the end of this war at the doors of the EU.
