Russian soldiers have repeatedly report draconian measures against deserters. These incidents illustrate the internal tensions within the Russian army.
Such methods are reminiscent of Soviet Union leader Joseph Stalin's "blockade units" of World War II, which shot deserting soldiers to prevent retreat.
Reports of poor morale in the Russian army are increasing: many soldiers are struggling against the hopelessness of their situation and are desperately looking for a way out.
Such incidents show the disunity in the Russian army and raise questions about the long-term consequences for the war. Will this further weaken the Russian army's fighting power? This poster in Moscow appears to be an attempt to react to the disunity. The poster, which shows a Russian soldier, reads: "Our victory is inevitable."
The attack on the surrendering soldiers has sparked outrage around the world and once again raises questions about compliance with international law in the Ukraine war.
