Some people are at high risk during the summer heat: Are you one of them?
Heat is no joke! Climate change is giving us warmer summers and more extreme heatwaves, so it’s important to keep in mind the following groups of people who are more vulnerable to be affected by weather.
According to the United States Center for Disease Control, pregnant women are more likely to suffer from heat exhaustion, heatstroke and be dehydrated and should take measures to take care of themselves.
CNN reports that another group at risk are those suffering chronic illnesses, particularly those dealing with kidney-related conditions due to hydration-related problems.
Laborers forced to work outside are also vulnerable to should wear sunscreen, drinking lots of water and avoid consuming beverages with high levels of alcohol or sugar, as the CDC recommends.
The CDC also highlights that low-income people don’t tend to have the same access to AC units and have to work longer hours and not usually in the best conditions.
However, the United States National Weather Service points out that most victims of heat-related deaths tend to be 65 or older, mostly because older people have reduced perspiration, which helps to regulate body temperature.
Regardless who you are, remember to keep hydrated and remain in the shade!
