The Artic blast brought dangerous temperatures
The Artic blast that hit much of the United States brought temperatures as low as minus 40 in some parts of the country and prompted at least 30 states to enact some type of alert for dangerously cold temperatures.
Several cases of hypothermia
Several fatal cases of suspected hypothermia were reported across, at least seven states, in the past week according to an article by The Washington Post.
Homeless people died in Seattle

92 weather-related fatalities
Moreover, CBS News registered 92 weather-related fatalities across the country over the past week.

The deaths include at least 25 in Tennessee and 16 in Oregon, which remains under a state of emergency following severe ice storms.

States that have reported fatalities
Fatalities have also been reported in Mississippi, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Washington, Kentucky, Wisconsin, New York, New Jersey and elsewhere, according to CBS.
A tragic incident in Portland

In one incident in Portland, Oregon, three people were electrocuted to death when powerful winds caused a power line to fall and strike their car. A baby who was in the vehicle survived.

Thousands of people without electricity

While electricity has largely been restored in most areas of the US that lost it due to the winter weather, tens of thousands of people remain without power across the country.

Airport chaos

Earlier this month, the Federal Aviation Administration warned that storms throughout the United States were likely to cause flight cancellations and delays.

Thousands of flights delayed or cancelled

More than 7,600 flights in the United States were delayed on January 12 alone, Reuters reported.

The cold is now dissipating
However, the cold is now ending and warmth is set to thaw parts of the United States following the frigid temperatures.
Risk of ice and flooding

But the warmer air will bring a risk of ice and flooding for some states, and another crippling winter storm is set to hit portions of the Plains and South, CNN reported.

37 million people under threat of flash flooding

Approximately 37 million people are under threat of flash flooding and excessive rainfall this week, according to the weather service office.

States that will be affected by rainfalls or floods
The states affected by heavy rainfall and flash floods this week are: eastern Texas, lower Mississippi valley and the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama and Tennessee.
Will there be more snow storms later in the winter?
The mild weather may also give way to colder temperatures in coming weeks, depending on several factors, including the evolution of the polar vortex and the ongoing El Niño, The Washington Post reported.
