The US governor's map will still benefit Republicans
After the 2024 elections, Republicans will have a favorable governor's map. The party kept all red states and won the only toss-up gubernatorial race.
Republicans control 27 states, and Democrats 23 after US voters in 11 states and two American overseas territories chose governors on November 5.
The Republican party had more on the table. They defended governors in two states where Joe Biden won in 2020, and Harris kept in 2024. Democrats only defended one in a red presidential state.
Delaware's governor race was declared safe as Democratic. Matt Meyer won and will replace the current governor, John Carney (pictured), also a Democrat.
The same happened in Indiana; exiting Republican Governor Eric Holcomb will be replaced by the GOP winner, Mike Braun.
The same goes for Missouri, North Dakota, and West Virginia. Their current GOP Governors will be replaced by Mike Kehoe (MO), Kelly Armstrong (ND), and Patrick Morrisey (WV), all Republicans.
Montana and Utah are also safe Republican territories. Governors Greg Gianforte (MT, pictured) and Spencer Cox (UT) won reelection in their states.
Vermont's Republican Governor, Phil Scott, also ran for reelection. His bid was more challenging since Joe Biden won the state in 2020, and Harris kept it in 2024, but he won.
Democrats' chances of keeping North Carolina were slightly less solid. Donald Trump won the state in 2020 and 2024, and the current Governor, Roy Cooper, reached the term limit.
Still, Democrats managed to keep the governor's seat in NC. The GOP candidate, Mark Robinson, was the center of an internet scandal and made controversial remarks during Hurricane Helene's recovery.
Washington's gubernatorial race also went to the Democrat candidate. Governor Jay Inslee is retiring, and Bob Ferguson won the election to replace him.
New Hampshire's was the only toss-up election this cycle. Republicans were trying to keep their slot in the state where Joe Biden won in 2020 and Harris in 2024. The current Governor, Chris Sununu, is retiring.
GOP candidate Kelly Ayotte beat the uphill battle and kept the state red. She won against Democrat Joyce Craig with an advantage of nearly ten points.
