The numbers of killed and injured are staggering

The conflict between Israel and Palestine has been going on for the better part of seven decades, and in all of that time, there have been casualties on both sides. It isn’t easy to know how many have been killed or injured but we have an idea of the recent numbers.

The UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs

The United Nations began tracking the yearly casualties caused by the conflict between Israel and Palestine in 2008 and the numbers it provides come from the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, which has a high standard for its information.

What casualties are counted in the data?

For example, deaths and injuries are only counted if they can be linked to the conflict or the occupation and are only added to the organization’s final numbers if the incident can be “validated by at least two independent and reliable sources.”

Exceptions to what gets counted

There are exceptions to this rule and Israeli final casualty figures are sometimes added to the information when there are media reports. Casualty figures are also only counted when they are within the “context of the occupation and the conflict.”

What casualties aren’t counted in the data?

“Incidents resulting in casualties, which did not involve direct confrontations, such as access delays, reckless use of weapons, unexploded ordnance, and collapse of tunnels are not included,” the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs website noted.

Other conflict-related incidents that aren’t counted

Moreover, deaths and injuries that took place in ”conflict-related incidents” that occurred inside Israel but did not include residents of “occupied Palestinian territory” were not included in the official numbers compiled by the United Nations. Let’s look at the figures.
