Trump isn’t telling the truth about Sidney Powell
Donald Trump has told a lot of lies in his life but one of the most outrageous just might be his recent statement on social media claiming that Sidney Powell was never one of his attorneys after she cut a deal in the Georgia election interference case.
Trump’s statement really was one of the more bizarre fibes he’s tried to tell the American people since Powell was very much a part of his legal team in 2020 for a brief period of time according to a report from CNN that detailed Trump’s comments.
Trump posted: “Sidney Powell was one of millions and millions of people who thought, and in ever increasing numbers still think, correctly, that the 2020 Presidential Election was RIGGED & STOLLEN.” If it seems rambling, just wait. It got worse.
“OUR COUNTRY IS BEING ABSOLUTELY DESTROYED BECAUSE OF IT!!!” Trump continued on Truth Social, adding: “MS. POWELL WAS NOT MY ATTORNEY, AND NEVER WAS. In fact, she would have been conflicted.”
The former president’s comments came three days after Powell cut a deal with Georgia officials in the state’s election interference case. Powell was charged alongside 17 other individuals and Trump for violating Georgia’s racketeering laws.
The Associated Press reported that Powell entered a plea of not guilty one day prior to jury selection and cut a deal with prosecutors that will see her fined $6000 by the state and serve six years probation for her role in the election scandal.
Powell will also be required to write a formal letter of apology to the people of Georgia in what seems like icing on the cake for a state that has long been embroiled in sorting out what happened in the wake of the 2020 Presidential Election.
Racketeering was not the only charge Powell was facing in Georgia's election case, she was also facing six other charges as part of the state’s wide-ranging effort to hold Trump and all those helped his efforts to subvert the election accountable.
Powell’s plea deal makes her the most high-profile defendant to assist the investigation into Trump and his election interference, which is a big problem for the former president and it may be why he’s trying to distance himself now.
“Her cooperation in the case and participation in strategy talks threaten to expose the former president and offer insight on what he was saying and doing in the critical period after the election,” wrote Kate Brumback of the Associated Press.
“Above all, the guilty plea is a remarkable about-face for a lawyer who, perhaps more than anyone else, strenuously pushed baseless conspiracy theories about a stolen election in the face of extensive evidence to the contrary,” Brumback added.
Powell likely has intimate knowledge of the events that occurred throughout the period of time that Trump and his associates were working to subvert the election and Powell’s flip may cause other defendants to help the prosecution.
Despite Trump’s claims that Powell was never his attorney, social media posts from the president’s time in office revealed Powell did serve as counsel for Trump in 2020, during the height of his attempts to challenge the presidential election.
“I look forward to Mayor Giuliani spearheading the legal effort to defend OUR RIGHT to FREE and FAIR ELECTIONS! Rudy Giuliani, Joseph diGenova, Victoria Toensing, Sidney Powell, and Jenna Ellis, a truly great team, added to our other wonderful lawyers and representatives!” Trump wrote on Twitter.
Trump also previously praised Powell for her representation of former national security advisor Michael Flynn in the wake of Robert Mueller’s special investigation into Flynn following the 2016 election according to The Hill.
“Ms. Powell did a valiant job of representing a very unfairly treated and governmentally abused General Mike Flynn, but to no avail,” Trump explained. “His prosecution, despite the facts, was ruthless,” the former president continued.
