Trump makes over $50 million in donations after guilty verdict
It’s still uncertain how Donald Trump’s conviction will affect his presidential campaign, but one thing is certain: his followers have started rallying behind him, opening their wallets.
The BBC reports that the guilty verdict in the Stormy Daniels case has injected new life (and more money) into Donald Trump’s presidential effort, which was lagging behind Joe Biden’s reelection campaign in terms of donations.
Trump’s campaign announced that it had managed to raise over 50 million US dollars in donations 24 hours after the verdict.
According to France24, senior campaign aids Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles wrote in a statement that more than a third of the money came from new donors.
The Trump campaign staff wrote that the digital donation system was overwhelmed after the “sham trial verdict”, with temporary online delays because of “the amount of traffic” from small-donor donations.
CNN reveals that overall, the Trump campaign collected 141 million US dollars in donations, slowly closing the gap with the Joe Biden campaign.
According to CNN, Joe Biden has to his disposition the largest amount of campaign than any other Democratic candidate in history, with 192 million US dollars in the bank by the end of April and more pouring in.
However, in the past few months, donations to the Biden campaign have slowed down as Trump’s fundraising has been skyrocketing.
The news probably raised the alarm for the Biden campaign. While the current White House resident is struggling in the polls and must face close calls in key states, fundraising has been so far one of their fortes.
Despite managing to outperform Biden in donation money, the Trump campaign has one major problem: funds have been focused on helping the New York mogul with his legal problems, compared to the money allocated to the day-to-day affairs of campaigning.
Although the Trump campaign puts small donors front and center, the BBC points out that quite a few billionaires have shown their support of the New York mogul.
Casino billionaire Miriam Adelson, who has a net worth around 30 billion US dollars, is expected to donate over 90 million to pro-Trump political action committee Preserve America.
According to the BBC, political action committees (PACs) in the United States can spend unlimited sums of money supporting a candidate running for an elected office.
Adelson is not alone in her support, Silicon Valley investors David Sacks (pictured) and Chamath Palihapitiya reportedly were planning to organize a fundraising event in San Francisco where attendees are requested to donate up to 300,000 US dollars.
However, as Forbes highlights, the Biden campaign has also attracted some big donors with deep pockets, such as Twilio CEO Jeff Lawson, Facebook billionaire Dustin Moskovitz, and Hungarian-born financier George Soros, pictured here.
Will money define who will be the President of the United States next November? At the end of the day, it’s one person and one vote who make and sustain democracy.
