Trumps latest comments earned him mockery and ridicule
Donald Trump tends to get himself into all sorts of trouble with the things that come out of his mouth but some recent comments he made on the campaign trail have earned the former president a heaping helping of mockery.
While speaking at an event in Iowa, the former president went on an asinine rant about magnets that was both intelligible and bizarre enough to earn Trump a one-way ticket to mass ridicule online for his nonsensical babble.
There’s no real way to preface the former president’s comments since there wasn’t any real context to his remarks besides that he decided to rail against the magnetic electrical catapult systems used on U.S. aircraft carriers.
“I could tell you about aircraft carriers, where they use electric catapults. They couldn’t go to the steam, which works better for about 1/100th the price, you know? The electric catapult, you know that story?” Trump asked rhetorically.
The former president then went on to explain that the engineers of the country’s newest aircraft carrier used magnets in the electric catapult design to help planes take off from the ship instead of hydraulic systems in John Deere tractors.
“We need them fast, these massive elevators. They used magnets, and they wanted to try it for the first time. This was a ship that was supposed to cost 2.5 billion, it cost 19 billion and didn’t work, and still doesn’t work right,” Trump said.
Trump went on to criticize the ship's designers, explaining that its magnetic systems for launching planes off the vessel didn’t work. A mistake that pushed the project about 900 million over budget for a new system that didn’t even work.
“Think of it, magnets. Now all I know about magnets is this, give me a glass of water, let me drop it on the magnets, that’s the end of the magnets,” Trump said. But he continued to talk and what came out of his mouth only dug the hole deeper.
“Why didn’t they use John Deere? Why didn’t they bring in the John Deere people? Do you like John Deere? I like John Deere,” the former president added, showing his near-zero understanding of how the country's defense industry works.
Trump continued his rant for several minutes according to Mediaite before he capped off comments with this stunning remark. “By the way, this is more interesting than listening to teleprompter stuff, right? Don’t you think? Because it’s business, it’s like business.”
The crowd in Iowa may not have been riveted by the former president’s off-teleprompter remarks, but it was the reception his comments received on the internet that made news headlines all across the country—mostly for their nastiness.
For example, White House correspondent and CNN political analyst Brian Karem said on the platform formerly known as Twitter: "Breaking: Donald Trump adds 'magnets' to the long list of things he knows nothing about."
MediaTouch Editor-in-Chief Ron Filipkowski joined in the mockery: "Dementia Trump is riffing on his magnets in water story, then tries to pander to the Iowa audience by bringing John Deere into the story because what's in his head to repeat in IA over and over is 'John Deere,' and the whole deal just short circuits into an addled, sweaty mess."
Filipkowski’s analysis of why the former president brought John Deere into the situation could be spot on. The 2024 primary season is about to kick off according to Newsweek and Trump’s comments may have been an attempt to link himself to voters.
However, the more likely reality of the situation is that Trump was just sharing what was on his mind because history has shown the world that the former president really doesn’t have a filter when he’s standing in front of a crowd.
It's also important to note that magnets do work in water. According to magnet producer IPEL International, water is almost completely non-magnetic so magnets will work under water “the same as they do in air or in a vacuum.”
