In October 2023, Ukraine claimed that it invented a new type of jamming-resistant radio for its soldiers according to a statement from the country's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation.

Revealed by Ukraine's Minister of Digital Transformation

Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov revealed the new system on his Telegram channel and explained the radio’s capabilities and why it was so useful.

Why the radio was needed

Russia has been using electronic warfare against Ukraine throughout the majority of the war and that made the development of an unjammable system critical to Kyiv’s success.

Developing a new system

This is why developers were tasked with creating a walkie-talkie radio system that could not be jammed by the advanced electronic warfare systems being employed by Russia.

How it works

According to Euromaidan Press, which got its details on the Himera from Army Inform, the new radio employs a 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard as well as a frequency hopping spread spectrum to evade Russia’s electronic warfare systems.

Details on the Himera

Ukraine's new radio can last upwards of four days in the field and can be integrated into situational awareness systems or used to find and evacuate soldiers via a GPS beacon.

Designed to keep soldiers in constant contact

The Himera was designed to allow Ukrainian soldiers to always stay in touch so military leadership could effectively coordinate their units according to Federov’s Telegram post.

Russia can’t decrypt the Himera

Federov claimed the new radio system could not be decrypted by Russian forces, which if true, would give the Ukrainian Armed Forces a powerful new tool to help their soldiers.

A project funded for success

Brave1 won the award for best defense technology start-up at IT Arena 2023 and it was given $10,000 dollars so that it could work on scaling production of the Himera Radio.
