Back in the day, politicians had campaign managers, press agents, speechwriters. Nowadays, it’s all about funny images on social media, but this is no joke: Joe Biden wants to hire a meme expert for his presidential campaign.

Meme expert wanted

Tech news website TechCrunch revealed that the Biden-Harris presidential reelection campaign listed an online job opening seeking for “Partner Manager, Content and Meme Pages”.

An internet guru for Joe Biden

According to the job listing posted online, the position demands a professional who “initiate and manage day-to-day operations in engaging the internet’s top content and meme pages”.

'Passionate about bringing political content to voters'

“The ideal candidate for this role is passionate about bringing political content to voters where they already are on the internet. They have a deep interest in politics and thrive in a fast-paced environment,” a Daybook posting for the role says, as quoted by The New York Post.

Salary? 85,000 US dollars

And you wonder, how much does it pay to spend the whole day making funny images for social media? Business Insider reported that the salary could be expected to be up to 85,000 US Dollars.

Only available in Delaware

However, to become Biden’s meme manager, you would have to live and work in Wilmington, Delaware, where the presidential family home is located.

Reaching out to the Gen Z voters

It’s no secret that Biden is trying to attract the vote of the younger generation. According to The New York Times, the democratic candidate is struggling to sway Gen Z voters that could be essential for him to win the election.

Going viral over TikTok

According to TechCrunch, the Biden campaign even has a TikTok account, despite the fact that the President has a signed a bill that could potentially ban the social media platform from the United States.

Donald Trump breaks the internet

This contrasts with Donald Trump. The former US President and current Republican candidate’s victory over Hillary Clinton in 2016 was in, no small part, to the “meme magic” of his supporters.

Loyal online (and offline) followers

Although Trump himself may not be tech-savvy himself, his boisterous, unfiltered personality attracted a legion of loyal, visceral followers within the digital realm that saw him far more real than whatever the political establishment had to offer.

The future of politics

Having someone who is an expert on going viral over the internet shouldn’t be seen as a fad to attract the kids, but a new medium to communicate, engage, and reach out to new generations of voters.
