Photos: Eruption of the Kilauea volcano on Hawaii

As a land of volcanoes, Hawaii is used to eruptions. On September 30, the volcano Kilauea erupted on its main island, as reported by the Hawaii Volcano Observatory. It's not the first time this volcano spews lava. This image is from an eruption of Kilauea in 2018.

The news of the Kilauea eruption immediately circulated on social media, as it became clear that lava and, above all, a lot of smoke began to emerge from the volcano.

Kilauea is a recent volcano: it was formed only 70,000 years ago. The volcano is located between the eastern slope of Mauna Loa and the ocean.

Not only the youngest but also the most active volcano in Hawaii, Kilauea caused a lot of problems in past years. One example of the damage from 2018 is in this image.

Looking back we find snapshots like this one, in which the path of the tongue of fire exhaled by the Kilauea is clearly visible.

In Hawaii, lava is present in the landscape. Sometimes, people can see remains of a more or less recent eruption.

For now, Hawaii is on alert, while scientists probe the characteristics of the Kilauea eruption. It remains to be seen if images like this one from 2020 will be repeated.
