The primaries in this Washington county could predict the November results
Biden and Trump secured their nomination on March 12's seemingly low-profile primaries. But one of those primaries could provide a window to the results of the November rematch.
Clallam County, in Washington, is famously known as the stage of the Twilight Saga. However, it is also notable for a wildly different reason: its voters always elect the winning presidential candidate.
In 2020, the 77,000-people county voted for Joe Biden and became the only one in the US to have voted for the winner of every presidential race since 1980.
Clallam is a purple county. Its residents have voted for strong-standing Republicans like Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump but also for deep-blue candidates like Barack Obama.
Throughout the years, the media has asked Clallam residents their opinions before elections. The past couple of years were no exception, as The New York Times and ABC have asked Trump and Biden voters in Clallam County how they feel the next election will go.
Some of Donald Trump's voters told The New York Times that the issues that trouble them most are the economy and immigration, two of the leading Republican talking points during the campaign.
Many blue voters, on the other hand, told the newspaper that Biden would not have been their first choice, but they hope abortion rights can keep the Democrats in the White House.
The journalists from both outlets also spoke to independent voters and some affiliated ones who wish they could see other faces on the ballot next year.
According to the articles, many Clallam County residents believed their neighbors would reelect Joe Biden in 2024. But does the prediction hold up?
If the March 12th primaries are any indication, the feeling of Clallam County voters has not changed in the months following the articles.
Joe Biden won the democratic primaries in Clallam County by 91%, a massive advantage over the second candidate, Dean Phillips, who only gathered 4%.
Donald Trump won the Republican primaries with a little less advantage: he gathered 76% of the vote, while Nikki Haley obtained 20%.
The county maintains peaceful coexistence despite some residents' unhappy reactions to these results. If Biden wins, it will mean that they will keep the streak for another four years.
