Experts urge not to discard the hypothesis that aliens are already 'among us'
One of the unanswered questions that fascinates scientists is whether humans are alone in the universe. Many experts argue that is unlikely, given the vastness of space. Harvard researchers Tim Lomas and Brendan Case and professor Michael Masters of Montana Technological University share this vision.
In June 2024, the three scientists published an independent article in which they proposed a rather daring hypothesis: the existence of crypto terrestrials.
In their paper, published in Philosophy and Cosmology, the researchers suggest that aliens may already be among us but are "hidden in stealth mode."
According to the article's authors, if not walking among us, these extraterrestrial life forms may have adapted to living underground.
"A third site of intrigue is the moon, particularly its 'far' side, which remains perennially hidden from view. Indeed, of all possible cryptoterrestrial locations, it has attracted the most speculation," the paper said.
The researchers frequently mention cryptoterrestrials in their investigation, but who are these beings? How do they present themselves? What is their origin?
According to what the authors told CBS News, one of the hypotheses is that cryptoterrestrials are humans from the future capable of time travel.
According to professor Michael Masters, one of the authors, stories of hypothetical alien encounters often describe beings similar to us. It would be unusual for creatures with human characteristics to come from other planets.
We may go on to look like them," Professor Masters told CBS, referring to typical depictions of "little green men."
"Based on our evolutionary characteristics over the last 6 to 8 million years, we are arguably going to have bigger heads, smaller faces, more advanced technology, and many of these traits are described in association with these beings," he concluded.
Prof. Masters told the outlet that cryptoterrestrials could have decided to hide underground because humans are not yet ready for direct contact. In their eyes, we might still seem highly "primitive," he argued.
According to their hypothesis, cryptoterrestrials could also be "magical" beings associated with ancient myths, which scientists translate into "Non-Conventional Human Intelligences."
These would be entities that, in various cultures, have traditionally been grouped under the names of goblins, gnomes, elves, and fairies, for example. These figures are usually described in mythological tales or ancient religions.
These beings would have had sporadic interactions with humans and may have been mistaken for deities or supernatural creatures.
The three Harvard researchers said that the intelligent beings responsible for the many UFO sightings on Earth could therefore be among us, "even walking among us."
"We're not saying this is right, we're not saying that this is absolutely 100% the case, we're saying these are some possibilities to help explain the origin of these beings," Professor Masters told CBS News.
The authors also concluded that, although speculative, this topic should be discussed since, if it is all true, these intelligent life forms "could help humanity address today's big problems, such as climate change," according to CBS News.
