Waiting for WWIII?

The Ukrainian conflict so far has involved Russia against a Ukraine that is backed by the EU and NATO in a way that might seem like a one-sided proxy war. Many fear that if Western nations directly face Vladimir Putin, it could lead to World War III. That moment seems to be getting closer every minute.

'On the ground'

A German military leak reveals that British soldiers are ‘on the ground’ in the Ukrainian battlefront, helping Kyiv troops.

Listening in a top secret call

According to The Guardian, Russian media shared an audio recording of a top-secret call between German air force officers talking about the presence of UK military personnel in Ukraine.

Storm Shadow missiles

The call, which was broadcast on Russia Today and other Moscow-affiliated news outlets, has been described as the head of the Luftwaffe discusses how the British were helping Ukrainians to fire long-range Storm Shadow missiles.

Target: The Kerch Bridge

The Storm Shadow missiles, which The Guardian describes as capable of hitting targets 150 miles (240 kilometers) behind Russian lines, were discussed for being used to blow up the Kerch Bridge connecting Russia with the Crimean Peninsula.

Insecure line

The BBC writes that the German government has confirmed the leaked call as real. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated that it had been recorded by due to one of the participants using an insecure line.

No German missiles for Ukraine

In the past, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has ruled out the possibility that his country would provide Taurus missiles to the Ukrainian military.

Germany won't be involved in a war

German state news agency DW writes that Scholz argued that sending Taurus missiles would require the aid and training from German troops and that he was against directly involving the German military in the Ukrainian war.

No soldiers from the EU nor NATO

“There will be no ground troops. No soldiers on Ukrainian soil sent by the European Union, nor NATO states”, The German Chancellor declared to DW.

A united Western front?

The Guardian writes that Russian state media have been using the recording as a proof that there’s a united Western front to fight Russia in Ukraine.

The Kremlin speaks out

The BBC quoted Russian government spokesman Dmitry Peskov, making the case that the leaked recording “suggests that the German military is discussing substantively and specifically plans to strike Russian territory”.

The divided states of Europe

However, despite NATO priding itself of being the largest military alliance in the world, things seem to be less than ideal among its most important member states, particularly between Germany and France, the EU’s top economies.

Macron says all options are on the table

According to French newspaper Le Monde, on late February 2024, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that he would not rule out anything when it comes to defeating Russia, including sending Western troops.

Not speaking for everyone in NATO

However, most of NATO members rejected the statements made by the French President, claiming that they would not send troops to Ukraine. Though, a direct confrontation may become inevitable.

'Not to be cowardly'

Macron, instead of backpedaling from his comments, doubled down and exhorted Ukraine’s western allies “not to be cowardly” in such critical moment for Europe.

'We want no escalation'

“Is this or is it not our war? Can we look away in the belief that we can let things run their course?” commented the French president, as quoted by Le Monde. “We want no escalation, we've never been belligerent”.
