How many federal workers has the Trump Administration fired?

In just a month, the Trump Administration has pushed for swift and deep changes in the Federal Workforce through reshaping, layoffs and buyouts.

Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and the secretive group of young engineers who work with him have pushed most of the changes.

According to The Guardian, a judge allowed the team to continue its mass firings and buyout programs after a union of federal workers sued the Administration.

A buyout program similar to the one Musk applied at X offered 8 months payment for resignations. According to The Guardian, 75,000 federal workers accepted the offer.

Aside from firing, the White House also pushed reshapes, starting with the Department of Justice. The Trump Administration reassigned key senior officials across multiple divisions, effectively demoting them.

The changes have also affected National Security agencies, such as the CIA, which, CNN reported, became the first major security agency to offer buyouts to its employees.

The Trump Administration also fired around two dozen prosecutors who investigated the January 6 insurrection and asked for a list of the FBI agents who participated. The President said he would fire “some.”

Still, the biggest changes are related to the DOGE’s massive layoffs program. ABC News gathered a list of the affected agencies, with some information from Reuters, Politico and the AP.

The Department of Homeland Security, lost more than 400 employees. FEMA lost 200 employees.The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency lost 130.

Also under the Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, DHS Science and Technology, and the Coast Guard had smaller cuts.

The changes also affect other areas of the Federal Government, such as Health, Education, and aid agencies. They started by placing 2,000 USAID workers on Administrative leave.

The next target was the Department of Education. Following President Trump's executive order banning DEI, the administration put dozens of Education Department workers on administrative leave.

The Department of Energy lost roughly 2,000 employees, including experts from the National Nuclear Security Administration. The agency had to rehire hundreds of them for security reasons.

The Trump Administration fired 1,700 workers from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) the agency in charge of protecting the interests of American consumers.

The V.A. lost over a thousand employees, according to a February 13 statement from the agency collected by ABC.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) fired 388 workers who were on probation. Another 170 are on leave.

The AP said the HHS expected to fire over 4,000 workers from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The CDCs lost 700.

The Department of Interior lost 2,300 employees. Of those, 1,000 worked for the National Park Service, and 800 for the Bureau of Land Management.

The HR office for the Federal Government lost 200 workers, the General Service Administration lost 100, and the Small Business Bureau lost 720.

ABC News reported that the IRS planned to cut more than 6,000 workers. The White House also said it would redirect armed agents to aid in deportation efforts.

The Department of Defense said it planned to cut at least 5% of its total civilian workforce. That could amount to over 40,000 employees. Far more than those in probation.

The list puts the total headcount of lost federal workers, including those who took the buyout (assuming they have not been fired) or are in Administrative leave in over 140,000 thousand.
