Was joining Truth Social a good move by Biden?

There's been a lot of talk about Joe Biden's absentmindedness as he ages into his twilight years, but the current president still has a lot of political tricks up his sleeve. This was best exemplified in October 2023.

Getting the truth to those on Trump's platform

In what might have been Biden's greatest piece of political maneuvering since taking office, he decided to join Donald Trump's 'Truth Social ' social media platform in order get the truth out there.

A genius troll

Biden’s presidential campaign announced in October that the president made the decision to join Donald Trump’s Truth Social, and his first post was a piece of trolling genius.

Convert’s welcome

“Well. Let’s see how this goes. Convert’s welcome,” the president’s first post read. But in that message, there was a glimpse of Biden’s larger strategic goal to win over voters for 2024.

A place to deliver the facts

In the biography of Biden’s new Truth Social account, you’ll find that the president’s team is describing it as a place that will deliver just the facts, and that’s the whole point of it.

Republicans don’t think the same

"Republicans can’t even agree on a Speaker of the House,” one official from Biden's campaign told Fox News Digital, “so clearly, not every Republican thinks the same."

Fighting misinformation on Truth Social

Biden’s move may just seem like it was a tongue-in-cheek joke but there’s was a real plan driving his decision to join Truth Social: the president really wanted to fight misinformation online.

Half-true Trump-isms and misinformation

Much of Trump's Truth Social profile is filled with the former president's particular brand of half-truths and misinformation, and it was a problem that Biden and his team were hoping to combat.

Injecting Biden’s message into the echo-chamber

The gist of the plan was explained by one of the president’s campaign officials is that they wanted to get Biden’s message into the GOP’s primary coverage to fight misinformation.

There is very little truth on Trump’s platform

“There’s very little 'truth' happening on Truth Social,” one senior Biden campaign official explained to Fox News Digital, “but at least now it’ll be a little fun.”

Making MAGA accountable

One campaign official explained that Biden intended to use this new platform to keep the Make America Great Again (MAGA) crowd accountable on their own social network.

Going into the lion’s den

Another Biden campaign official told Fox News Digital that the move was like "going into the lion’s den to point out Republicans’ hypocrisy and have a little fun at their own expense."

What is Biden posting?

For example, if you scroll through what has been added to Biden’s Truth Social account since joining the network you’ll notice it's mostly videos of Republicans criticizing Trump.

Leveraging Republicans to attack Trump

"We will be leveraging the fact that Republicans can sometimes be our best messengers!" one of Biden's campaign officials explained to Fox News Digitial.

Republicans bashing Trump

The strategy from Biden’s team so far does seem to revolve around using other Republicans to tell the truth about the former president and the policies he adopted that hurt the country.

Antagonizing the poltiical right

Of course, the president’s Truth Social account isn’t just about setting the record straight but also about the fun Biden’s team will have while antagonizing the country’s political right.

“We thought it would be very funny”

“We just joined Truth Social, mostly because we thought it would be very funny,” Biden’s X account noted. “Follow us there for truths and retruths or whatever they call them.”

Biden’s larger goal to build an online presence

Biden does have the opportunity to change some minds on Truth Social but Axios noted the move was part of a larger goal to build Biden’s online presence ahead of 2024, and he's bee making use of the platform.

A good example of Truth Social's usefulness

For example, in early February, Biden's Truth Social account published a video from Nikki Haley's campaign that featured Haley descrbing Trump as "declining" accoridng to Newsweek.

A response from Trump's team

"Of course, the Biden campaign is promoting clips of Nikki Haley, because they know she'll be the biggest pushover if she became the nominee," Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung explained to Newsweek.

Biden has amassed a small following on Truth Social

Since launching in October, Biden has amassed 97.3 thousand followers. It's a far cry from Trump's 6.64 million, but it does show there are those on the platform willing to hear Biden's message.
