'Red, White, and Blueland': a GOP lawmaker's odd suggestion for renaming Greenland
Georgian Republican Representative Earl L. "Buddy" Carter introduced a bill proposal in Congress to authorize President Trump to start negotiations to buy Greenland and give it a new name.
President Trump has signaled his intentions over Greenland since his first term. However, this time, he has doubled down and asserted he expects the US government to take the island.
Greenland is a Danish territory, and the authorities of that country have expressed their resistance to Mr. Trump's plan. However, the President recently sent his son to visit the island.
The spike in interest even led President Trump to have a serious discussion with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. According to the BBC, the argument got heated.
The new bill allows the President to negotiate a deal with Danish and Greenlandic authorities, which now seems a far-fetched possibility.
Still, House Rep. 'Buddy' Carter jumped a few steps ahead of the negotiation. He secured a name for what he believes will be a new American territory.
Mr. Carter proposed that Congress rename Greenland, perhaps for the sake of conceptual symmetry, 'Red White and Blueland.'
"Any reference in a law, map, regulation, document, paper, or other record of the United States to Greenland shall be deemed to be a reference to "Red, White, and Blueland," the bill says.
Denmark and Greenland both have red and white flags, but, to be fair, the island was named after the color in Danish. In Greenlandic, its name is Kalaallit Nunaat (land of the Kalaallit).
According to a historic Icelandic saga, Eirik the Red was exiled from Iceland and settled in Greenland. He used the name to paint the island as a fertile and forgiving place to attract more settlers.
So, Greenland's current name was a deceiving description of the island, and its proposed new name is a deceiving description of reality: a bill will not grant the US any jurisdiction over the territory.
