Some music wasn't allowed after the attack

No matter how much time passes, the consequences of the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States will continue to resonate for decades.

It altered our perception of security forever

The attack put global security in jeopardy and caused many countries to significantly reconsider many elements of society that, until then, had not even been considered.

Unexpected measures

More than a decade after 9/11, one of the most striking measures undertaken following the attack was the banning of some music by the then-President of the United States, George W. Bush.

Banned music

Through Clear Channel Communications (now iHeart Media), a notice was sent to more than 1,100 radio stations with a list of 165 songs deemed "'lyrically questionable' and insensitive," banning them from playing the songs in the days following the attack according to Kerrang!,  a British music magazine.

An urban legend that ended up being confirmed

The year was 2001 and social media did not yet exist, so for a while, the list of banned songs was an urban legend that no one knew or could confirm, until it was leaked in the American media.

Old and current songs at that time

The list included popular tracks such as 'New York City Cops' by The Strokes (pictured), whose album was released on 4 October 2001, and songs from the back catalog of many other groups such as Rage Against the Machine, which disbanded a year before the attacks.

Even newly released albums

Even more complicated was the case of 'Rollin'' by 'Limp Bizkit' (pictured), whose video was recorded on top of one of the Twin Towers and awarded Best Rock Video at the MTV Video Music Awards held on September 6, 2001. The video stopped being broadcast immediately after the attacks.
