Trudeau took a swipe at Trump and ticked off his biggest supporter
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took a subtle swipe at Donald Trump after the world-famous leader chided American voters for choosing not to elect their first female president for the second time in eight years.
Trudeau didn’t mention Trump by name according to Mediaite but his remark came just hours after the President-Elect posted a scathing Truth Social message that referred to Trudeau as Governor of the Great State of Canada.
While speaking in Ottawa at a gala on December 10th for Equal Voice, an organization CBC News reported was dedicated to getting more women elected to public office, the Canadian Prime Minister uttered a jaw-dropping remark.
"We were supposed to be on a steady, if difficult, march towards progress. And yet, just a few weeks ago, the United States voted for a second time to not elect its first woman president," Trudeau told the assembled crowd.
The Canadian Prime Minister went on to explain that women’s rights and their progress were under attack before Trudeau added: “I want you to know that I am and always will be a proud feminist… You will always have an ally in me and my government."
Whether or not Trudeau’s comment was meant as a dig at Trump has been a subject of debate in both Canadian and American media. John Paul Tasker of CBC News reported the remarks could have been “a thinly veiled swipe” at Trump.
Trump’s Truth Social mockery may have been the impetus for Trudeau’s subtle attack on the President-Elect. However, the Canadian Prime Minister's comments were far less damaging than those that came from Trump.

“It was a pleasure to have dinner the other night with Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada,” Trump wrote on his social media platform according to The Hill.
“I look forward to seeing the Governor again soon so that we may continue our in depth talks on Tariffs and Trade, the results of which will be truly spectacular for all! DJT,” the President-Elect added.
Trudeau may have been trying to offer up a similar nasty dig at the President-Elect, but if it was his intention then he may have kicked the proverbial hornet’s nest. Antagonizing Trump at a time when he will soon have the power to hurt Canada is a bad move.
Trump has threatened to impose 25% tariffs on all Canadian goods entering the United States, a step that could seriously harm Canada’s economy according to projections by University of Western Ontario’s Ivey Business School Professor Andreas Schotter.
Schotter noted in a November 28th article that a 25% blanket tariff on Canadian goods could see job losses hit 1.5 million positions and result in severe supply chain problems, permanent structural damages, and a significant reduction of the country’s GDP.
The automotive industry in Canada would be hit the hardest with the “energy sector, chemical and plastic manufacturing, forestry products, and machinery sectors are also highly vulnerable” according to Schotter.
With so much at stake, it seems downright irresponsible for any public official to poke the American bear just weeks before he is back in the Oval Office, especially when a comment as mundane as the one Trudeau made was set off Trump’s biggest supporter.
SpaceX founder and Tesla CEO Elon Musk commented on Trudeau’s alleged dig at the President-Elect and called Trudeau “an insufferable tool” on X that wouldn’t “be in power for much longer,” which in turn fueled calls on Musk to help oust Trudeau from power.
How the comments will play out when Trudeau and Trump come face-to-face again has yet to be seen, but Canada’s politicians may need to be extra careful when voicing their opinion on U.S. politics over the next four years, lest they stir Trump’s ire for reprisals.
