Putin's losses have been massive

When Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, it was unlikely that he believed the resulting conflict would last for years and lead to massive military equipment losses.

Putin's three day war

Reports emerged just weeks after Ukraine showed a staunch willingness to defend its territory that suggested Putin and his military advisors believed that Kyiv would fall within three days of the invasion.

Ukraine stopped Russia

However, Ukraine stopped Russia's initial advance into the country and it has been fighting ever since to defend its territory from Moscow, which has resulted in huge losses of Russian military assets for Puitn.

The Ukrainian General Staff

The Ukrainian General Staff provides the world with daily figures on what has been knocked out by its armed forces and also updates a daily total of the many units of equipment eliminated. But trusting these numbers can be a little difficult at times.

An independent source on Russian losses

Ukraine is a direct combatant in the war and has a vested interest in its ability to showcase the amount of Russian weapons it's destroying. This is why it's important to look to independent sources for a better idea of what has been destroyed since February 2022.

A reliable source to understand Moscow's losses

One of the best sources of independent information on both Russian and Ukrainian military equipment losses comes from the Dutch open-source intelligence Oryx, which only posts loss figures from verified photo or video evidence of destroyed, damaged, captured, or abandoned weapons.

Russia has lost 19,808 units of equipment

As of January 8th, 2025, Oryx reported that Russia has lost 19,808 units of military equipment since launching its invasion, though it also suggests this number is likely far higher due to the nature of its process. Here is a look at some of the most astonishing numbers as well as a list of the biggest equipment losses Moscow has suffered.
