The US military gets rid of Biden-era policies on DEI and transgender personnel
The US military saw quite a few changes during the Biden Administration. Particularly, some policies that didn't sit well with some of the more conservative members of the Armed Forces.
However, now that Donald Trump is back in the Oval Office, he has signed a series of executive orders that dismiss these changes done by the previous administration to the Armed Forces.
According to Reuters, the series of orders that Trump signed mostly focus on removing diversity and inclusion from the US military and transgender personnel serving in the Armed Forces.
The New York Post, which had the exclusive on the story, explained that one of the executive orders banned “gender radicalism in the military”, revoking Biden’s 2021 directorate to allow trans people to serve in the Armed Forces.
Although there are no exact records on how many trans people currently serve in the US military, Reuters claims that estimates range from 15,000 individuals to the low thousands.
According to The New York Post, Trump’s executive order not only bars any transgender individual to serve in the military on grounds of being mentally unfit.
It also enforces a prohibition of men and women serving in the Armed Forces from sharing bathrooms, bedrooms, or changing areas.
“The pursuit of military excellence cannot be diluted to accommodate political agendas or other ideologies harmful to unit cohesion”, reads the order signed by President Trump.
Trans people weren’t the only ‘woke’ hot topic addressed by Trump’s series of executive order. The US President also demanded that all current and future Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs to be terminated.
According to Reuters, the executive order ending DEI initiatives states that US military academies have to focus on teaching that “America and its founding documents remain the most powerful force for good in human history”.
According to The New York Post, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is commanded to lead an internal review of all the instances of “discrimination” by DEI practices, possibly aiming at some “woke” generals who oppose Trump.
Another order would reinstate US military personnel that were discharged for refusing being vaccinated for COVID-19.
It remains to be seen what else Donald Trump and his team have in mind for the US military.
