GOP Governor says Trump is why Republicans are always losing
New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu believes former president Donald Trump is the reason why the Republican Party performed so poorly in the country’s recent elections.
Governor Sununu appeared on NBC’s Meet the Press where he blamed Trump and his for being the driver behind election losses that bleed all the way down to the local level.

“It’s about the former president more than anything,” Sununu explained according to USA Today, adding that he had spoken to school board members who said they lost their seats because of Trump.
“I’ve had… Republican school board members, that have lost their seat because they felt like they had to constantly answer for being a Trump Republican,” Sununu said.
Sununu went on to say that Republicans weren’t just losing federal seats but also state governorships, school boards, and congressional seats in places like New Hampshire.
"We’re very independent-minded,” Sununu explained about voters in states where the tides of power can shift like New Hampshire, “The Trump brand doesn’t work… It just doesn’t.”

USA Today ran with Sununu’s comments but provided some context for his frustration and noted New Hampshire was one of several states that saw a Democratic sweep in the state's extremely competitive congressional elections.
One reason why New Hampshire Republicans performed so poorly in the last elections was because Trump-aligned candidates wouldn’t connect with the new agency called the state’s “traditionally independent voters.”
Sununu is one of the most vocal critics of the former president according to USA Today and that might be why he’s repeatedly called for the party to move on from Donald Trump.
However, despite Sununu’s criticism of the former president, it seems Trump has never been more popular among Republican voters according to the latest polling information.
A recent CNN poll that was conducted by SSRS found that the former president was the favorite among all the Republican candidates with a 30-point lead over his closest rival.
52% of Republicans and independent-leaning Republicans want the former president as their nominee in 2024 with Ron DeSantis coming in second with just 18% of the vote.
The SSRS poll also found that roughly 4 in 10 voters are ready to back Trump with 43% saying they were definitive backs. Only 20% said they were firmly behind another candidate.
The big question for the GOP now is will the worries that Governor Sununu has over Trump’s antics bleed into the 2024 Election and lose Republicans the votes of American independents.
In mid-August, Marist released some of the latest data on the perceptions of the country’s independent voters and found that in a hypothetical election between Trump and Joe Biden, Trump led Biden by 8 points among independents.
It’s important to remember that polling isn’t always accurate and RealClearPolitics has a general election between Trump and Biden running at nearly a dead heat with Biden sitting at 44.7% of the vote and Trump at 44.0% as of September 5th.
