Donald Trump is now officially the 47th president of the United States and in his inaugural speech he repeated everything he promised during the campaign: persecution of illegal immigrants, raising tariffs and even changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico.

“Remain in Mexico”

According to France 24, the president said he would stop all illegal immigrants from entering the country. He also declared a national emergency on the southern border, declared drug cartels to be terrorist groups and made it clear that he would once again encourage the “Remain in Mexico” policy developed during his first term.

Illegal entries stopped

In his inaugural address Trump vowed that "all illegal entry will be halted" and that millions of "criminal aliens" would be deported.

Dialogue, respect and cooperation

Trump's statements, of course, had repercussions in Mexico. President Claudia Sheinbaum congratulated the new president and, according to Infobae, stressed that "dialogue, respect and cooperation will always be the symbol" of the bilateral relationship between the countries.

Government prepared

Over the past few months, Sheinbaum has repeatedly said that her government is prepared for the mass deportation that Trump is threatening to impose on his southern neighbor.

Mexican migrants

According to the BBC, almost a third of the 11 million undocumented migrants in the United States are Mexican. Trump's promise is to deport one million people a year, a number almost four times higher than the peak number of deportations recorded in 2012: 300,000.

Remain calm

"We would like to tell our fellow countrymen and women that, first, they are not alone; and, second, they must also remain calm, and we must also see how the process develops over the next few weeks," said Sheinbaum.

Cabinet meeting

According to Infobae, Sheinbaum also met with her presidential cabinet after Trump's inauguration. The meeting was attended by the foreign minister, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, and the outgoing and incoming heads of the National Migration Institute, Francisco Garduño Yáñez and Sergio Salomón Céspedes Peregrina, respectively.

No backing down

Sheinbaum's message is clear: "Mexico does not have to bow its head." The president also demanded that "equal treatment" be maintained in the bilateral relationship, according to El País, and stated that she will be attentive to the magnate's decisions.

“Whatever it takes”

Sheinbaum maintains that a plan to address Donald Trump's decisions regarding migrants and other issues affecting the Latin American country has been in the works for a long time. "Mexico will do whatever is necessary," the president concluded.
