The dramatic images of the attack in New Orleans

Initially, 10 people were reported dead, but the death toll now stands at 15 dead and 35 injured, following the dramatic attack on a crowd in New Orleans, which occurred on New Year's Eve.

New Orleans Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick was the one who outlined what happened in a statement, confirming that it all began on January 1 at 3:15 a.m., when the suspect drove a pickup truck at high speed "with a very intentional behavior of running over as many people as possible."

The crash occurred on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter, a popular tourist spot in New Orleans. The driver mounted the sidewalk to avoid the security barriers and plowed into the crowd with his vehicle.

After the impact, the driver jumped out of the vehicle and began shooting indiscriminately, causing even more victims, until he was shot down by the police.

In a statement, the FBI confirmed that the perpetrator of the massacre died in an incident they have described as an "act of terrorism," according to CBS News.

The suspect has already been identified by authorities as Shamsud Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old US Army veteran living in Houston, Texas.

However, authorities suspect that Shamsud Din Jabbar did not act alone and are working on the hypothesis that he had accomplices in the attack, which is why they are investigating this avenue.

New Orleans coroner Dr. Dwight McKenna confirmed the updated death toll to the media, adding that it will take several days to complete all the autopsies and that identities will be released at that time.

Some of the people who witnessed the incident recall that everyone started "running and hiding under the tables," according to the BBC.

After being held in a nearby premises for a while, the police let the people out. "We walked past dead and wounded bodies all over the street," one of the witnesses told the newspaper.
