Tall tales: Donald Trump's kids have struggled to tell the truth
It now seems pretty clear that Donald Trump's concept of truth is slightly different from the average person's. In fact, Trump and the truth have a complicated relationship, to say the least.
According to The Washington Post, Donald Trump told an estimated 30,573 lies over the four years he was President.
Unsurprisingly, Trump's slippery grip on the truth and the ease with which he skewered the facts led to the former President's suspension from all social media platforms. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram allowed a man of great power too large of a platform to spread misinformation regarding dangerous subjects.
We've all heard the expressions, "a chip off the old block" or "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree" and the classic "like father like son," and in the case of the Trump children, it seems these old expressions hold some truth.
Donald Trump's children have been caught telling some pretty big whoppers over the years as well....it would seem the art of telling tall tales runs in the family.
Trump's older children Donald Jr., Eric, and Ivanka, all work for the family businesses. Tiffany Trump has yet to join her sibling working for the family, but surely she counts on daddy's $upport.
It is not surprising that Trump's children follow their father's playbook and support whatever madness he spouts off when Trump Sr. is the one signing all of their pay checks.
So, aside from the whole family proclaiming that the Presidential election was rigged, what other whoppers have Donald Trump's offspring told? Join us for a look at some of the tallest tales spun by the Trump children.
The LGBTQ+ community has been battling non-stop for equal rights and legal protection for many years. It hasn't been a linear journey for the collective, and it seems every time one step is taken forward for the LGBTQ+ community, another two steps are taken back.
Fortunately, during Obama's time in office, it seemed like the United States was finally making progress in this area. In 2015, BBC News reported that same-sex marriage was legal in all fifty states. Later, in 2016, according to NPR, measures were introduced into the school system "to protect transgender students from harassment, accommodate their preferred names and pronouns, and give them access to the locker rooms and bathrooms of their choice."
However, conservatives were not happy about these measures and thus elected Trump into office to fight their "moral" battle for them. Many members of the LGBTQ+ community considered Trump's entrance into the White House as their worst nightmare. Donald Trump's daughter Tiffany simply doesn't understand why!
In 2020, Mercury News reported that Tiffany Trump spoke at a "Trump Pride" event. Tiffany decided it was time to clear the air about her father's views: "It saddens me. I have friends of mine who reach out, 'How do you support your father? We know you! We know your best friends are gay!'" Tiffany continued, "My father has always supported all of you."
Despite "having many gay friends," Tiffany doesn't seem very in touch with the damage her father's administration did to the rights of the LGBTQ+ community.
According to ProPublica, by 2019, 31 cases of LGBTQ+ rights were dismantled by the Trump administration. Examples include: dismantling federal protections and resources, banning transgender people from enlisting in the military, abolishing workplace protection rights, and refusing to investigate trans students' bathroom ban complaints. In the years since, the GLAAD Accountability Project has developed an even more extensive list of the damage done to the community.
Americans may not agree on much these days, but SURELY they can all agree that Donald Trump was the most divisive President in recent American history. The United States became a country divided between Trump detractors and supporters without much room for a middle ground.
However, Eric Trump would have you believe that his father was the most loved President in the history of the United States of America. During an interview, Sean Hannity's Fox News show Eric Trump said, "There's never been a more beloved political figure in our country's history. There's 75 million Americans who would follow him to the end of earth. I mean, they love the man; they love what he stands for."
A Gallup poll that was taken when Trump left office on January 20th, 2021, begs to disagree. According to the Gallup poll, Trump had a mere 34% approval rating when he left office. In contrast, Barack Obama had a 59% approval rating following his eight years in office. If that isn't enough, according to a report by The Bookings Institute, "In addition to coming in last in the overall greatness rating, President Trump was ranked by our surveyed experts as the most polarizing of all presidents."
Barack Obama entered the White House during the worst economic crisis in the United States since the Great Depression. According to Forbes magazine, Obama managed to use the American Recovery Act to turn things around quickly.
If Factcheck.org is to be believed, things improved so much that stock had hit a historical high when Donald Trump took over at the White House. Not only that, but 11.6 million jobs had been created, 15 million more citizens had health insurance, and property values had increased by 20%.
Donald Trump Jr., is such a loyal son that he believes his father deserves all the credit for improving the economy. At his 2020 RNC speech, Don Jr. made several declarations about all his father had done for his country. Donald Trump Jr. said that before COVID-19's arrival, the United States was "seeing the American Dream become a reality for more of our citizens than ever before." Don Jr. continued proclaiming, "After eight years of Obama and Biden's slow growth, Trump's policies have been like rocket fuel to the economy."
The Washington Post, a decidedly more reputable source than Don Jr. stated that the average income rose by just 3% and that "consumer and business confidence" increased under Trump. However, according to The Post, "Manufacturing output and jobs stalled in 2019, an early warning sign of economic trouble."
Remember when "Pizzagate" was a big thing? The conspiracy theory has since been totally debunked, but back in 2016, it had the world buzzing. Time Magazine reported that the wild conspiracy theory involved allegations that Hillary Clinton was in charge of a sex-trafficking ring that was run out of a pizza restaurant's basement.
Several celebrities and politicians were falsely accused of being involved in this dark business. However, those accused of these horrendous crimes all had one thing in common....they all spoke out loudly against Donald Trump. Thanks to MAGA supporters and QAnon, human trafficking had become a partisan issue. When Trump was elected into office, human trafficking became one of his administration's mainstays.
Trump's oldest daughter Ivanka took it upon herself to publicly lead the battle against human trafficking. According to CNN, in 2017, Ivanka Trump said that human trafficking was "an ugly stain on civilization." Later, when Ivanka gave a speech at the 2020 RNC convention, she glorified all that Donald Trump had done to fight against the practice.
Ivanka said,"I want to tell you the story of a president who is fighting for you from dawn to midnight," she went on to declare, "... I've worked alongside the president as he signed into law nine pieces of legislation to combat the evil of human trafficking."
Nevertheless, it seems that Ivanka might have been exaggerating all her father had done for the cause...just a pinch. USA Today reported that according to the Congress website Trump only "issued two executive orders targeting human trafficking" in addition to "three proclamations observing" the criminal enterprise. USA Today clarified that Ivanka is confused and that she "mistakes nine pieces of anti-human trafficking legislation for executive orders signed by Trump to combat child trafficking."
